On Thursday April 1, 2010 the Clifton Volunteer Fire Department responded to a crash between a BNSF train and a Dodge Pickup. According to witnesses at the scene the pickup attempted to go over the crossing after the safety arms had come down to warn the approach of a train. As the truck attempted to go around the crossing arms it dropped off the crossing causing the vehicle to get stuck on the railroad tracks. A BNSF freight train traveling at approx. 50 miles per hour had no time to stop and slammed into the truck which was pulling a trailer. The truck then flipped several times killing the two occupants of the vehicle. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.Neither man was weraing a seatbelt. One was ejected from the vehicle and was underneath the vehicle when the Fire Department arrived on scene.

In light of this accident the CVFD wants to stress the importance of paying attention to railroad crossings. When you see the arms of the crossing go down DO NOT attempt to go around the arms. They are there for a reason.

Below are several pictures taken at the scene of the accident. These photos are graphic.

This is the trailer that was being pulled by the pickup.
